YEAR OF THE VILLAIN COVER
OBJECTIVE
2019 was the "Year of the Villain" for DC Comics. Cape & Cowl wanted to do a fun back cover of $0.25 issue that DC was going to release as a promo for the year's theme. They approached me to see what I could do and I thought doing them all as Batman villains with Oakland as a backdrop would be awesome. I wanted to show some love for both the shop and the city. I also snuck my wife and daughter into the cover, hehe.

WORK DONE
Client: Cape & Cowl Comics / DC Comics
Role: Art direction and Illustration.
I pretty much got free-reign on the project from concept to illustration. The only topic that took some heated discussion was between the shop staff about which DC/Batman villain they were. Nerds, lol.
PROCESS
After the concept was agreed on and the staff had their chosen Batman villain persona, they sent over photos and I went to town reimagining them as their DC villain counterpart. Seeing as how Oakland is a pretty integral piece to shop's identity, I included some buildings that folks from The Town would recognize from the jump. After a few rough sketches for placement and a sign off from the shop, I went to town.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I love working with Cape & Cowl, they generally let me go crazy and do what I do. It was fun walking around saying that I did a "DC cover" haha.
